Station 6: Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus

"Dare to Encounter"

By Angelique Jean‑Noel

How is God calling us to act in this Lenten season? When we reflect on the Stations of the Cross, we often hear God inviting us to take up our cross and follow Jesus. But what else? As I meditate on this station, I feel God urging us to take seriously the example of Veronica.

In this sixth station, we witness a radical moment of encounter between Jesus and a woman who steps forward from the crowd to wipe His face. On the surface, her gesture seems small compared to the immense suffering Jesus is enduring. What is a simple cloth to the Son of Man, the King of Kings, the Messiah? Everything.

Her act echoes Jesus’ own words in Matthew’s Gospel: “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat… I was a stranger and you invited me in… I was sick and you looked after me.”   These small acts of mercy matter to God. They reveal the heart of discipleship.

The Passion of Christ was God’s will, and no human action could have changed the course of His suffering. Yet even in the midst of this divine mystery, there was still room for empathy, compassion, and encouragement. God calls us to accompany those who are neglected, ridiculed, abused, or cast aside. He longs for us to restore the dignity and goodness that are intrinsic to every person He created.

This work is not easy. It requires vulnerability to truly encounter another — especially when they are in their lowest moments. When we dare to look someone in the eyes and acknowledge their suffering, we are confronted with our own negligence and the ways we fail to love.

Yet these acts of solidarity draw us closer to God. They bring us nearer not only to our Father in heaven, but to our Savior who suffers on the cross. So let us be brave enough to step out of our comfort zones and into the crowds of taunting people.

We hear Your call, O Lord.

May we seek to encounter Your people more meaningfully,

through actions like those of Veronica.
