Station 5: Simon Helps Jesus Carry His Cross

"You Don’t Have to Carry It Alone"

By Kristine La

In today’s society, independence is a highly praised trait. From a young age, we are taught to grow up, find our place in the world, and stand on our own. But independence, as empowering as it can be, can also feel lonely.

As Jesus walked to Golgotha after a night of interrogation and torture, I can only imagine how alone and exhausted He felt passing through crowds of spectators. Jesus knew this journey was His to walk and His cross to bear. Yet when Simon of Cyrene was pulled from the crowd to help, Jesus accepted the assistance without hesitation.

I often find myself shouldering my burdens alone, clinging to the belief that perseverance, hard work, and grit are all I need to reach my goals. But over time, the pressure builds. Cracks form in my optimism and confidence. I feel alone in my struggles, overwhelmed by the long road ahead. The days and nights of striving feel endless, and doubt begins to whisper:

Will I ever get there?

Is what I’m doing enough?

Am I enough?

Reflecting on this station reminds me that while I pray for God’s strength and wisdom, I sometimes fail to recognize the help He has already placed in my life. Just as Jesus received support along the way, God has surrounded me with a community willing to walk with me — if I allow them to.

It is still my cross to bear and my goals to pursue, but my family and friends help in countless ways. My husband cooks for me on days when I come home drained. My coworkers check in and offer help with my never‑ending tasks. My friends are only a call or text away, ready to listen, advise, or simply be present.

I do not have to walk this journey alone.

Even Jesus, the Son of God, humbly accepted Simon’s help. I pray to be more like Him — to persevere in turbulent times, to keep faith when I am weary, and especially, to accept help with humility. May I learn to lean on the community God, in His goodness and wisdom, has blessed me with.
