Station 11: Jesus Is Nailed to the Cross

"The Nails of the Cross – Unfettering"

By John Tran

"There they crucified him." — John 19:18

When I contemplate the moment Jesus was nailed to the cross, I realize how easy it is to move past this scene and focus on what follows. The significance of His death often overshadows the depth of what He endured in the physical act of being nailed to the cross. This moment invites me to pause — to sit with the agonizing, excruciating pain of human flesh being pierced by thorns, nails, and a spear, and the emotional torment of the crowd’s jeering and taunting. Here, I reflect on the pain before the release.

Bearing My Own Cross

In my daily life, the challenges of bearing my own cross come in waves. Some days the burden feels light, and I move with ease. Other days, the weight becomes almost impossible to carry. When my stress and pain reach overwhelming levels, I recall the moment Jesus was nailed to the cross. Whatever I am enduring now is likely nothing compared to the suffering He experienced in that moment.

Finding Hope in Christ

Reflecting on this station today, I am reminded that death follows the nailing to the cross. While the physical body may endure unimaginable pain — pain like nails piercing flesh — the moment of death brings release for the soul. This truth is central to why I strive to center my life on Christ. The world is ever‑changing, but Christ remains my grounding. In Him, I find hope — a hope that encourages me to keep moving forward.

A Prayer for Strength and Release

I pray for the strength to endure the trials that come my way and for the grace to spread hope, even when it feels overshadowed by the nailing of Jesus to the cross and His death. I pray that all the weariness and suffering the world carries today will one day lead to release — a final exhale — and rest in a place where pain cannot reach.
